Global Investment Research Challenge

The CFA Society of Melbourne has kicked off our inaugural Global Investment Research Challenge with teams from 7 Universities.  The teams are writing a research report on Pacific Brands.  We've arranged a set of skills seminars for them, they meet the COO/CFO of Pacific Brands and their final report and presentation will be judged.  The winning team will be off to Manila in March 2010.

Background:

From August 2009, the CFA Society of Melbourne will host a local Investment Research Challenge in conjunction with local participating universities.

The Challenge is a competition in which student teams from the top area business schools write an equity research report on an assigned company and present their findings to a panel of investment industry experts.  The winning team will then advance to compete in regional, and ultimately, the global final hosted by CFA Institute.

This annual educational initiative, based on the Investment research challenge originally developed by the New York Society of Security Analysts, is designed to promote best practices in research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis.  It complements students’ university curriculum by simulating the ‘real world’ experience of an equity analyst.

The Challenge consists of the following components:

I. Analysis of a Public Company

II. Mentoring By a Professional Research Analyst or Portfolio Manager

III. Writing an Equity Research Report

IV. Presentation of Research to a High-Profile Panel of Experts

We will be holding skills seminars covering a number of areas important to the research, report writing and presentation process and will give all the teams the chance to meet with the company we ask the students in the CFAM challenge to analyse.  The report presented to the CFAM final will then form the basis of the report for the regional final.

Each university chooses one team of 3-4 members to represent it.  Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible.  Students must be enrolled in the current term at the university they represent at the time of the local Challenge final in November/December 2009.  CFA Charterholders and students who have prior work experience in fundamental company analysis are not eligible.

Last year, CFA Institute member societies held local competitions with more than 300 students from over 80 universities worldwide, including these schools ranked in the 2008 Financial Times list of top MBA programs:

Babson College, Boston College, Boston University, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia Business School, ESADE (Spain), IE Business School (Spain), Indian School of Business, London Business School, Jiao Tong University (Shanghai), MIT, NYU Stern School of Business, Rice University, Texas A&M, University of Pittsburgh, University of Texas, University of Virginia, William & Mary

For the CFAM local Investment Research Challenge, we anticipate participation by the major Melbourne universities.

The competition will culminate with the 4th Annual Global Investment Research Challenge, to be held in 2010.  The exact date and location are being finalised.  The Global Challenge consists of the winners of the regional finals held in Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America, along with the team from the New York Society.  The 2008 winner was the Hong Kong Baptist University and 2009 has been won by the team from Singapore so we’re on a great run in terms of teams from the Asia-Pacific region!

All teams must be finalised by 7 August 2009, to attend the CFAM kick-off meeting in August 2009.
