Your website can be a powerful tool to display pictures of events. We have two new tools available to make it easier for visitors to access your pictures and easier for you to put pictures on your website. The Slide Show Web Part will automatically create a slideshow of your pictures. The Picture Gallery Web Part displays your pictures in gallery format with the ability to view the full size version using a pop-up window. Both of these Web Parts have navigational controls. They can be setup to show pictures from a Picture Library or a subfolder of a picture library.
To get the most out of you pictures, it’s recommended that pictures be optimized for the internet. Using one of the many available graphics editing programs (GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, etc.), rescale the largest dimension of the picture to no more 1024 pixels. (For most pictures, rescaling the largest dimension to 400 pixels will create an accurate representation) Rescale the resolution to 150 pixels per inch. Remember to save the image as a copy. By resizing your pictures you will improve the user experience by reducing page loading time

Adding an RSS(Really Simple Syndication) Feed to your site is a great way to provide updated content to your members. CFA Institute provides many RSS Feeds that maybe of interest to your members.
To Add a RSS Feed

on sites of interest to your members)

- Login to your website using your username and password
- Go to the page you would like to add the RSS Feed on
- Go to Site Actions>Edit Page

- Click the down arrow of the new web part, then in the drop down list highlight and click Modify Shared Web Part. This will open the Content Editor Pane to the right; you will also notice that the section you are editing is highlighted with a perforated border in yellow.
- In the Content Editor Pane on the right, Enter the RSS Feed, we copied at the beginning ,by clicking in the right clicking the box titled RSS Feed URL and select paste
- Expand the Appearance link in the far right editing column, by clicking the plus mark beside it. Then Enter a Title for the web part if you wish it to have one. If you don’t want it to have a title, set the Chrome Type to None.
- Next expand the Advanced section and uncheck the first three options (Allow Minimize, Allow Close, and Allow Hide. This keeps web parts from being deleted. Deleted Web Parts CAN NOT be restored!)
- Then select OK in the Content Editor Pane.
Remember when working with Publishing Pages don't forget to Check-In or Publish your changes. Failing to Check-In or Publish the page will prevent other authorized users from editing the page.

Many societies may find it useful to keep track of the views and usage of their SharePoint websites. We currently have tried two ways for societies to get web analytics. Here are instructions on implementing them.
Using Built-in SharePoint Usage Reports
- Request access to Usage Reports for your society web site by sending the request to societytech@cfainstitute.org.
- Once the access has been confirmed. Sign in to access your admin account on the web site
- Go page that you want to view reports from and select Site Actions => Site Settings.
- Under the Site Administration section, choose Site Usage Report.
- Select the desired report criteria and select Go!
Using Google Analytics
- Go to http://www.google.com/analytics/ and set up a Google Analytics account for your society.
- Enter your Google Account email and password and click Sign In. If you don't have a Google Account, click Sign up now to create one.
- Click Sign Up.
- Enter your Society Website's URL, (example: http://cfanorthcarolina.org). Enter a nickname for this account in the Account Name field, then click Continue.
- Enter your contact information and click Continue.
- Read the Google Analytics Terms of Service. If you agree to these terms, select the Yes checkbox and click Create New Account to continue. The Tracking Instructions page that appears contains the tracking code that you'll need to paste into each page of your site.
- Copy the tracking code to your computer clipboard (Ctrl+C). (Note: You will have the option of choosing the Legacy Tracking Code or the New Tracking Code, either one should work on your SharePoint site.) It’s a good idea to paste (Ctrl+V) the code somewhere else like Microsoft Word or Notepad.
- Click Finish.
- Add the copied code to any Content Editor Webpart on any of the pages of your website you would like to track. (If you do not feel comfortable with the following steps, please send a request to update your website to societytech@cfainstitute.org, make sure you include the tracking code)
- Go to the web page and select Site Actions => Edit Page.
- Select the content area you want to edit and select Edit => Modify Shared Web Part to open the editing pane
- In the Content Editor Pane on the right, choose Source Editor…
- Place the cursor at the very end of the existing code. Paste the tracking code (Ctrl+V) and click Save.
- Note: If there is no Content Editor Web Part on the page, you can add one. Enter the code in the Source Editor. Then expand the Layout section in the Content Editor Pane and check Hidden.
- Allow up to 24 hours for the reporting to start for your pages.
- To view your reports, simply sign into your Google Analytics account and choose View Reports.
5/10/2010We have started this blog to provide useful information especially designed to help administrators of society SharePoint sites. This is a supplement to the online documentation found on the Society Leader Resource Center(SLRC) as well as to provide additional tips for maximizing the capabilities of the society technology offered by CFA Institute.
If you can not access the SLRC or have any questions, please contact Society Technology
